Reviews

from Shindig! Magazine

The third album proper from these Paris-based psych troubadours is a huge leap forward from 2016's 'Stranger' - and that was a pretty great record to start with.

But from the first clanging chords of 'Sanitise Me' It's clear this is next level stuff. Nick Wheeldon sounds desperately haunted, howling over reverb-laden gothic blues like some unholy collision of Nick Cave and The Yardbirds.

While the garage-surf sound of old is still at this record's heart, sprung organ, pedal steel and violin add depth and a folk-country feel that is raw, ragged but always elegantly wasted.

Distilling influences from the The Seeds to The Triffids, the furious, fuzz drenched two minutes of 'A Man Needs A Home' sits next to the gospel-tinged 'The Day We Touched The Sun' and the simple romantic beauty of 'Come Back to Me'.

Souful and sexy, SILENCE KILLS may turn out to be a record for the ages.

from Whisperin' and Hollerin

A blast of treble carried on a tidal wave of reverb assails the listener’s ears to herald the arrival of the third album by Parisienne purveyors of 60s retro style psyche and surf. ‘Sanitize Me’ is a raw, raucous blast of psychedelic garage rock that would be right at home on one of the ‘Pebbles’ compilations.

Most of the album finds the band exploring dreamy, soft-focus mellow territory, as on ‘Living a Lie’ and ‘You Walked Away’, which carry lovelorn lyrics which quaver in haunting washes of twangy guitar, augmented variously with piano and strings. Elsewhere, they go oddly country on ‘I Don’t Know Why’, and the string-soaked ‘Come Back to Me’ is sad and evocative.

There are still enough rowdy stompers, and while the slower, more reflective songs have greater emotional resonance, sometimes you just can’t beat a romping thrashabout.

from Reverb Is For Lovers

Dramatik pur.

Unvergleichlich das staubige „The Day We Touched The Sun“ oder das einfühlsame „I Don’t Know Why“.

„Is She There?“ wird dann zum wirklichen Abschluss melancholisch.

Fazit: Ein großes Werk.

Album of the Month

„The Day We Touched The Sun“ ist unvergleichlich. Violinen und Piano begleiten das wundervolle „I Don’t Know Why“.

fromThe Wee Review

The Parisian group Os Noctambulos are back with a follow up to their 2016 album Stranger. Silence Kills showcases a slight maturation from the band without sacrificing the ‘60s inspired surf punk sound. A real treat for fans of garage rock and that woozy surf punk style, Silence Kills is a great album with a mix of hard punk beats and laid-back tunes.

The band pride themselves on their growth but if you’re a fan of their previous work then don’t be put off by this statement. There is clear evidence of maturity throughout Silence Kills with the inclusion of synthesisers and string sections that offer a surprising harmony with the garage rock aesthetic. Tracks like The Day We Touched The Sun are much more than just a ‘60s throwback tune as a result of the instrumental variety.

And yet the feeling of the ‘60s never leaves the album. The guitars are punchy with a distinct reverb treble that sets the tone for most of the album. The bass lines walk for miles, with Flowers of Evil featuring a particularly moving bass riff. Vocals from Nick Wheeldon display a somewhat fascinating range, being able to dance between soft heartfelt lyrics to punk rock wailing.

Despite the clear ‘60s surf rock inspiration along with the ‘90s garage rock aesthetics, the album never feels anything but contemporary. This is one of those albums that has the potential to escape genre. Garage surf punk sounds like such a comical niche but really any rock fan should give this album a listen. There are no bad tracks here. Each one is guaranteed to get your foot tapping, if your whole body isn’t moving.

If a three-year break between albums can lead to this then maybe more bands should be taking that length between albums. Silence Kills is a fantastic record.

Paris based Os Noctambulos have released a new album “Silence Kills”. It’s jangly guitars drenched in reverb and hypnotic tambo touch just perfectly. One of their songs from the album ‘You Walked Away’ is worthy of your attention. Lead singer Nick Wheeldon has another favorite band of mine called 39th and the Nortons, which is also worthy of your time. Check out here.

The 1980’s ushered in a 60’s psychedelic revival in which a small handful of bands, especially from Los Angeles, built a grassroots scene and sound that bounced off Arthur Lee & Love and The Byrds satellites. During the decade, Roger McGuinn square sunglasses were flying off the shelf. The Bomp Records label was especially key in pushing the sound globally beyond the shows at local haunts Paladinos and Madame Wongs.

As the 90’s blew in… we saw UK bands like Thee Hypnotics, The House of Love, Primal Scream, and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin blend psychedelic, grimy drum and bass, and higher octane rock n roll into the mix. In the late 90’s/early 2000’s Brian Jonestown Massacre, Outrageous Cherry, and The Green Pajamas carried the torch once again and pushed the narrative down the road. The past decade+ saw bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, The Black Angels, Temples, and Os Noctambulos emerge and stay true to the craft and continue to turn up the volume in search of ears.

From Datapanik

« Fingers, like the wicked roots of a tree

picking through my mind

disinfecting every thought

the thorns in my side. »

“Silence Kills” from OS Noctambulos is So Good It’s Criminal

As you dive through the vast expanse that is the international pool of new music, there’s an infinite amount of genre overlap that pops out. Country-rap, blues-punk, classical-metal… you get the picture. But the following really got my attention: ” Psychedelic Garage, Country, Folk, Soul band”. It’s not unusual to come across a hybrid of the last three, but add psych garage to the mix? What the hell does that sound like? It sounds like the kick ass album, recently released, from Os Noctambulos.

What’s cool about this group is that, over the course of their new album Silence Kills, they lean on each genre at different points. For me, the track Goodbye really stood out because it’s a great example of them leaning on psych garage, but definitely incorporating the others too. I can’t think of another track that’s so garage-y but has pedal steel. It’s a pretty rockin’ sound:

Any way you cut it, this is a serious track. But, the guys from Os Noctambulos want you to know they can rock even harder. A Man Needs a Home is them just going for it – all out. It sounds like something similar to bands like King Tuff or Wavves. Pretty punky with definite garage aspects. Plain and simple: KICK ASS.

Listening to “Silence Kills” from front to end is an experience. Because the band is so versatile, you never really know whats coming next. There are a few songs that are a bit more intricate and folksy, but I gotta leave you something on the album to listen to for yourself, right? So go check out all 11 tracks. Not doing so may be a punishable offense in your respective legal jurisdiction.

1960s inspired Parisian garage rock outfit return with atmospheric third LP

Os Noctambulos: Silence Kills (Stolen Body Records) Os Noctambulos are a garage band from Paris, whose third record Silence Kills, a collection of 60’s influenced psychedelic rock is a complete and mature step forward in the band’s fledgling catalogue. With a sound that is equal parts autumnal brooding and revivalist bombast, this eleven-track disc marks them as amongst the best groups of their ilk.

To say that Silence Kills marks a windy trail through haunted territory, littered with gems would be a staggering underestimation. Tracks like the resplendent, You Walked Away so blissfully melancholy with its jangly guitar feedback and the punk meeting rattlesnake shake on, A Man Needs A Home stand alone as anthems, worthy of being blasted from the windows of ancient apartment houses. I will confess to knowing very little about the Parisian psychedelic rock scene that spawns the band. But I have been to the city and wandered around in living history and Os Noctambulos’ sound feels right at home in a gypsy cabaret on those narrow cobblestones wandered by the glowering figure of Victor Hugo.

Among the album’s strongest offerings, I Don’t Know Why is a reflective dream piece with gloomy underpinnings. It effervesces that jittery preacher feeling of Southwest desert garage rock. I really enjoyed, The Day We Touched The Sun and Come Back To Me which were examples of neo-classic psychedelic rock at its nostalgic best. There is hardly an instrumental misstep among these tracks to my ear, every one a fully fleshed out idea brought to vivid life in the band’s more than capable hands.

On previous Os Noctambulos (meaning “night owls”) singles and EPs (as well as 2016’s excellent album, Stranger) the band’s sound had more jangle and came across as far less defined. This album, however, in addition to meeting its instrumental aspirations features polished layers of production. The whole record sounds cavernous and alive.

Featuring an exciting sound, Silence Kills is, by every possible measure, a record worth listening to and in-depth exploration. 4/5

from Colours Through The Air

Parisian Psych band Os Noctambulos are fairly new and this album is a fantastic listen. There are many other purveyors of retro 60's psych but this is done so well, it sounds authentic.

'Sanitise Me' opens the album brilliantly. It has a very raw sound and brought to mind The 13th Floor Elevators. The vocals are almost screamed giving it a heavy sound, but it still has the strong hooks of guitar pop.

'Living A Lie' is my favourite song here and a lot more melodic. The harmonies are dreamy and its instantly catchy and memorable. It is still very 60's sounding, reminiscent of Jefferson Airplane. 'Come Back To Me' is another highlight. A simple yet beautiful song, with great use of strings and lovely harmonies.

It ends on the sublime 'Is She There?' which is so heartfelt and almost timeless in quality. A highly recommended album.

The band also have another project with a slightly different lineup called 'The Necessary Separations'. This album has more Americana vibes and is also well worth checking out. Full of superb songs and beautiful pedal steel.

Not altogether dissmiliar are Parisien quartet, Os Noctambulos, whose SILENCE KILLS (Stolen Body Records) offers a feast of heavily reverb'd guitars and acid rock twang. Led by singer/guitarist Nick Wheeldon they summon the spirit of the late Roky Erickson on the Elevators-like 'Tamed' and the rampaging 'Goodbye', while 'Flowers of Evil' reimagines The Byrds as a gnarly surf band. Curiously too, there's a post-punk sense of melodrama here, most notably on 'You Walked Away'.
